The Modern Victory Garden

This is a young butternut squash growing on a vine that has climbed up the chain link fence and over into the nearby rhododendren tree. Because the fruit is being set on a vertically grown vine, slings for pollinated fruit are necessary to giv ethem support as they mature and grow heavy. I like to use old pantyhose for that purpose as it stretches s the plant grows and quickly dries out after a rain. Photo taken August 29, 2012.
