I attended Valley Nursery's free classes this weekend on fruit tree orchards, pruning fruit trees, and mason bees. I loved it! The instructor who's been active in horticulutre for many years says he mulches around the base of his fruit trees with rocks! One, because that's what he has on hand and a lot of, and two, if you pick a rock up, it's always moist underneath. It keeps moisture, but not too much around his trees without the bugs like other mulches can bring, and when the sun actually does come around, the rocks warm up the ground and keep it warm which the fruit trees love! I thought it was quite a good idea! Anyone else do this?

Our landscape trees have a gravel mulch around them, but I have not done it with other trees. It totally makes sense though and is a good approach to use if you have rocks readily at hand to use.

I love Valley Nursery. :D
