I am definitely getting better at making them.   I was getting them just a bit too wet at first but have an eye for the consistency now.    I like the mini blocks for starting fast start items - like cabbages, kale, lettuces, etc because when I transplant them up into the medium blocks I only keep the germinated and thriving specimens giving me a full stand in my seed trays.   However, I do not like the minis for starting slower to germinate items - like onion seeds - because keeping the tiny blocks properly hydrated is tricky.   They easily dry out but also can easily be over watered.   This past weekend, I started 64 medium blocks in two varieties of onions by seeding them directly into the medium blocks right from the start.  I am interested to see if I have better luck starting these slower start items in the larger blocks.

The lettuces and pac choi I started quite a while back in the mini blocks and then transplanted up to the mediums were really beautiful healthy seedlings.   I hardened them off over the week of Christmas and then transplanted them out into the unheated greenhouse and under covered grow tunnels on Friday December 30th.   They are settled right in and are growing along nicely (albeit it slowly since the light is diminished outside and it is colder).    That's pretty much all the experience I have to date with them so far.    The real seed starting schedule got officiailly underway this past weekend with the main crop of onions and will ramp up beginning in late January.   I imagine I am going to continue to learn quite a bit during the peak seed starting season.
