Im considering building next month a medium size greenhouse. As 2012 approaches rapidly I'd like to get a jump on the growing season and a polytunnel is a welcome idea to solving that issue. I already have the thick plastic on hand via Craigslist- and more than a few PVC hoop house ideas in mind. Besides the obvious tomatoes and peppers to grow- what would you grow in a greenhouse year round? I think lettuce and pac choi would be a favorite. Keep in mind Im living in the suburbs of Seattle so my typical growing season is just like Lauras. Cool summers and mild winters. And lots of rain. Your thoughts? Huzzah! Jim

Sounds like a great project Jim! I have different things growing in my small greenhouse at different times of the year. During the winter months I have cold and semi hardy crops growing for fresh eating - lettuces, kale, pac choi, carrots. In the spring, in addition to the afore mentioned crops, I use it to harden off my starts. In later spring I plant peppers, basil, and other heat lovers because the extra warmth of the covered space in summer really helps those plants. I have a hard time with tomatoes in the greenhouse though because the closed environment tends to bring on fungal problems.. I may try yet again this year with a well pruned plant and see if I can get better results.
I look forward to some updates on how this project is going!
