Hello all!

I got a couple of questions. I just got a couple of the big ten gallon black nursery pots. I also have some nice leftover soil so there is no way I can leave these pots empty! Any suggestions on what I could plant that will still produce this late?

Also my yukon golds (3'X3' patch) have fallen over but are still green and blooming. I am thinking about eating those suckers and trying to get another crop. I was wondering what you think about that as well. I'm in Seattle area.....hold on Laura! the son is coming!!!

:D

The sun is coming!   The sun is coming !   (okay I will calm down now - but boy it is great to have that to look forward to this week!)

On the potatoes, you certainly can harvest from them now but the yeild will be far less than if you let them go on to final maturity.    How bad do you need the planting space?

Lucky you with the big black nursery pots!   It's getting too late to grow the summer heat lovers but here are some ideas for you:

Potatoes - Yup they grow fine in pots and if you grow a mid to early variety and plant it right now - it should have time to mature before the weather get's too cold.

Swiss Chard - plant by direct seeding, keep it watered well, and then enjoy this hardy plant that will keep going well into the winter - all winter if you give it just a bit of protection during the worst cold spells.   I love Bright Lights as it is mild flavored and has a beautiful colorful appearance.

Carrots - These are big enough pots and deep enough that you can grow carrots in them.   Be sure to keep it well watered until the plants get established as black pots will tend to warm up and dry out faster than garden soil.

Cabbages - plant cabbages now for a fall/winter harvest.

Broccoli - same thing as cabbages!

Virtually anything you could plant in the ground right now that has time to mature before fall really sets in - can be grown in pots!   Have fun with them.  :D

I think maybe I'll solve both problems with one pot. I wanted the garden space for more potatoes so I"ll plant some potatoes in the black pots and put in some more carrots too. Thanks!
