So now it's been determined by The Cook that we should grow artichokes.....have you ever grown them before? Any tips, suggestions, ideas? That's all! But for others....what 'heritage' type vegetables have you grown? (I'm including asparagus in this category, and rhubarb too, i guess!). I think I need to add a new bed for new rhubarb...mine is doing well since I transplanted it into a full sun zone, but it's an area with poor drainage, AND the variety tends to produce skinny stalks....what's your favorite source for rhubarb?

I have yet to grow artichokes but I know Lori Christie grows them successfully in Seabeck and may be able to provide some good insight. I was actually giving serious consideration to adding some artichokes to the garden next season - so I would be interested in what others have to say on this topic too.
As for heritage varieties of vegetables, I have grown several varieties of Brandywine tomatoes and really love them - however, since moving to this area I have pretty much given up trying to grow late season beef steak tomatoes as our growing season is just too mild and get's rainy again too soon. I know I have other heritage varieties I have grown but am drawing a blank at the moment. This year I have Cherokee Purple tomatoes growing which is an heirloom variety - the seed was given to me by a fellow gardening blogger. To be honest though, I tend to grow more open pollinated varieties and not necessarily heirloom varieties.
I have Valentine rhubarb and I honestly forget whom I purchased the crown/root pieces from?! It's been a nice plant but it is getting really chomped on this year by some insect.
