My wife and I just watched "Food Inc." wow what a wake up call. We have decided to make a much greater effort to buy locally. We are getting a freezer and planning on buying part of a local grass fed beef and starting to look for nearby sources for poultry and vegetables. I have always wanted to start buying more local. I don't know why but the recent economic collapse has made me even more determined to support my area farmers instead of a mega corporation. Not to mention the fuel for shipping all those out of area products. We will start to buy more organic products as well. I'm not getting obsessed about it but I want to gradually move in that direction. My garden will definately be bigger next year and I'm even going to start cutting back on the pesticides and chemical fertilizers we use. I've never been a "tree-hugger" and don't intend to be but since I work 8 hours a day protecting the environment. ( I am a wastewater treatment plant operator) I just feel this is a step to protect my food and my family and the earth. Anyways, off my soapbox but I now understand the "Modern victory Garden" concept much better. See you at the farmers market!

Hurrah for you and your wife Larry!   The risks and problems inherent in our factory farms and industrialized food supply are quite sobering.   The  good news is - for the investment of a little extra effort there are better alternatives available to all of us.

Hey Larry,

This is interesting stuff.   I've looked at The $ Bottom Line with most of my purchases - but now I'm considering buying local when it's possible.

In a world of mass produced/ mass shipped things - it's refreshing to see that I might be able to keep some local jobs local while I still learn how to become slightly more independant and off grid.

I'm not a tree hugger either, but I think I see where local/ small shop produced items will be 10X better than sweatshop/ mass market/ petrol driven stuff will come from.

Take back your food!
