I am putting in a new asparagus bed instead of moving my old one. Lumber is 2 x 12, will be the entire length of this picture, 2 feet wide, at the end of this section where the daffodil is. Will it work to just spread out the roots & cover with my mix, gradually adding mix til the box is filled?

I think it would be better to dig the bottom soil in the bed and amend it really well, and plant the crowns 2 feet apart in the bed. Then as the spears emerge - add the soil mix on top to bring it up to the top of the box. Asparagus needs to have a deep root system and the depth of the box looks way too shallow for their needs. But by digging up the native soil at the base and planting into that you increase the depth tremendously.

Sorry, didn't realize I posted it twice! I haven't added the 12" boards for the box yet, but I was afraid it was too shallow. Did I tell you I got 13 yards of mushroom compost delivered yesterday? I've told everyone else. What you suggested is what I had been considering. Great minds work alike.

That sounds like it will turn out really well Dixie. I may be doing an asparagus patch rejuvenation project next year. My patch here is now over three years old and it is not performing like it should. My old patch in central Washington was not much bigger but we were always overwhelmed with asparagus each spring. Thsi patch has left me "under" whelmed. It may be the variety I planted is just not a good performer. I am giving it this spring to redeem itself - otherwise, I am going to tear it up and start over.
