And Now For Something Completely Different

Posted on January 5, 2011 at 10:07 PM

I have been interested in growing my own edible mushrooms for quite some time.   Never acted on that interest though until this year.   I decided to go ahead and give it a try - but on a small scale to see if it is really something worth pursuing any further.   Purchased a mushroom growing kit that provides everything I need (just add water!), making this “toe in the water” growing effort very easy.   The box arrived yesterday and I was like a kid with a new toy!

Getting it set up took just a few simple steps.   I then located the box in our guest bedroom (which generally is cooler than the rest of the house).    The information provided not only makes the process easy - it also provides good general background information on the overall process of growing mushrooms.   From here on out I just need to spritz it with water periodically and be patient - as it will take several weeks before I will have anything to harvest.   Patient?   Me?   Now that really IS something completely different!

OHHHHH! Now you're talking! I've been wanting to grow mushrooms too. I can't wait to see how this turns out for you. What kind of mushrooms?

This is really exciting, my wife has wanted to do this for years so we will really enjoy seeing how your operation goes. How fun and interesting.

hsheather - It IS rather fun to have something different to learn about!

Thomas - These are just plain white button mushrooms. There are many other kits available but I decided to keep it simple to start out with.

Mike - I have been wanting to do this for quite a while too, just never indulged the wish until now.

Great! I'm going to try that with shittake mushrooms this year. Have to get a little organized where I'll grow them before I order them. We like the button mushrooms in spaghetti sauce. What a great source! Right in your own house!

So. Are you still going to call it the guest bedroom, or are you going to call it... the Mush Room? Ha! Ha!

I've always thought about it, but never done it myself. I've always wanted a system that could be sustainable in mushrooms. IE you can get the medium and inoculate it with spores from your own mushrooms. But I haven't had the time to look into it.

Dan - I keep watching byt so far it is just... well ... wet compost! LOL!

Veggie Pak - HA! I love it! Mush Room! The resident is a real Fun Guy (Fungi)!

Daphne - You definitely can do your own inoculation of the right growing compost with spores or spawn and grow your own. I am discovering that the really hard part of doing this sustainably is getting a supply of the proper compost materials - the mushrooms I am growing need a hot composted mixture of straw and manure. in the old days that was easy enough to get because horseman all used straw for bedding.... but since I had horses for years and years... I know that most modern day equestrians bed stalls with shavings and rarely use straw. In addition, mushroom growers douse the compost heap with urea to get it to burn hot for the compost cycle - and organic solutions that provide the same results are a little more limited. Not impossible - just some challenges.

I would totally try that if I liked mushrooms. ;-)

Have you started any seeds yet? Looks like you're starting onions next weekend, but have you started any greens yet?

Veggie Pak - I think we are both being very punny!

Sandy - I have some lettuces and spinach in the shop under grow lights growing. In the greenhouse I have some pac choi, chinese cabbage, cabbages, kale, and swiss chard growing. I am planning to start some more lettuces in another week or so. I also started some day neutral onions back in late November/early December and they are looking really good. I am going to monitor how they do to the traditional started onions and see if the extra jump yeilds better results. They are about do to move into a deeper pot though... maybe a project for today.
