Harvest Monday - July 19 2010

Posted on July 18, 2010 at 11:14 PM

Each Monday, Daphne’s Dandelions hosts “Harvest Monday” where everyone submits links to their blog posts summarizing their harvest for the week.   It’s always fun to see what everyone else is harvesting from gardens in many different regions.

This week I harvested plenty of broccoli, lettuce, potatoes, and zucchini for our daily meal prep and had enough broccoli to also freeze some for winter use and plenty of extra lettuce to share with some friends at work.   I did not get pictures of all the harvests, but here is a good portion of them.

Onions 0.50 lbs

I?m jealous of all that broccoli and lettuce you have! Especially broccoli, as so far I have never had success in growing it.

Like vrtlarica, I've had no luck with broccoli either. Yours looks terrific ! Your lettuce is looking as fresh as ever and your potatoes are making me drool. Lovely harvest !

Nice harvest, lettuce envy. I haven't been able to grow lettuce in the past 2 months, it's too hot here.

Love your potatoes, when did you planted them? Do you wait until the leaves die before you harvest them?

Marcia - I am coastal pacific northwest. The maritime climate generally is quite moderate most of the year round - no super extremes of cold or heat - but it makes growing summer heat loving crops like tomatoes and peppers a real challenge. On the positive flip side... I can overwinter hardy crops with virtually no protection.

vrtlarica - I have good years and bad years with broccoli. It is a bit of a tempermental crop, but I adore it so I always grow it.

miss m - Thanks! The broccoli has been particularly nice this year and the lettuce has hung in their far longer than usual because we have had a particularly cool summer this year so far.

Robin - And I am wishing for some more heat so my peppers and tomatoes would set and ripen fruit! LOL!

Mac - I planted those potatoes in late March. I harvest potatoes for fresh eating needs as soon as the tubers are sized up enough to be worth digging. However, the big harvest of storage potatoes is done after the vegetation has died back and the skins have had a chance to toughen up. I have a very large potato patch so that it will supply our summer fresh harvest needs AND provides for the big storage harvest that feeds us through the entire winter. The big potato lift in the fall is quite an undertaking!

Nice potatoes, and look at that tub full of lettuce! Wow nice harvest, and nicer still that you had extra to share.

wonderful harvest! I would love to try to grow broccoli but everyone tells me it is hard to grow here because of our heat.

Angela - I enjoy sharing a part of our garden bounty once in a while with friends and family.

Jeana - Broccoli is indeed more challenging if you are in a hot/dry environment but not impossible.

Marcia says...
Please take me off your email notification whenever someone else comments on your blog. Its more than I need to know.

Marcia - I am not sure why you are getting those email notifications. I have sent a help desk request to the site support to find out why this is happening so I can turn it off for you. In the meantime, I will delete your two comments and see if that stops it for you.

I love the bucket of salad and the bowl of broccoli - very -productive and tasty looking. Looks like you are doing some good eating at your house.

I'm jealous of all of your broccoli. We have a handful of plants in the garden, but hardly ever get anything more than a handful of ounces. We had a small harvest of potatoes as well this last time. Harvested a bit early on purpose so that we could have green bean and potato salad (with bacon and green olives). Yum!

holy cow, how are you still getting so much lettuce? That means you haven't been getting your fair share of this heat that the rest of us have been suffering from, right? :) Your broccoli also looks so fresh and abundant. So impressive!

Lots of lettuce still! Your lettuce set up is really working well. I finally fixed my browser so I don't have to keep logging into your blog. Some cookies.sqlite file, blogger stays logged in too.

Ottawa Gardener - We are definitely enjoying the bounty of the garden at the dinner table. In fact, I am starting to get into zucchini overload mode already!

mamaraby - We ran out of storage potatoes about two months ago and I was really hungry for potatoes again by the time they got big enough to begin harvesting.

thyme2garden - While you have been experiencing immense heatwaves, we have had a rather coolish summer this year. It only recently warmed up and by that I mean we are reaching highs of 75 to 80 degrees on a daily basis. That is actually pretty normal for our summers. Mild maritime climate that has only rare and short lived extremes in the summer and winter.

stefeneener - Wish I could say it was somehow my doing, but I think the broccoli bounty is more a function of some good soil, good seed, and a mild/cool summer. :D

Dan - I go through that with my logins periodically too. Glad you got it working for you. Amazingly enough, the lettuce patch is bouncing back (yet again) from the last hard harvest. I think our summer is so mild this year that I may get to eat lettuce virtually all summer into fall!
