Harvest Monday - July 5, 2010

Posted on July 4, 2010 at 10:47 PM

Each Monday, Daphne’s Dandelions hosts “Harvest Monday” where everyone submits links to their blog posts summarizing their harvest for the week.   It’s interesting to see what everyone else is harvesting from gardens in many different regions.   I can never seem to get my act together to post on Harvest Monday’s but I sincerely want to try and participate more often and this week is a good one to get started with because the harvests are starting to ramp up (finally!).    Monday’s are always hopping busy for me, so I will actually be posting my Monday Harvest posts on Sunday evenings.

I did not get pictures of all that I harvested, but here is quite a bit of it.

  • Lettuce 5.25 lbs

Your definitely have a lot of pictures for not having your act together. I never seem to get pics of all of my harvest. That's a really nice selection of veggies and everything looks so so good :)

Lovely! Especially those potatoes. Potatoes and carrots (and Walla Wallas) are my favorite crops at this moment in time. I'm wishing I'd planted more of the first two.

Robin - I have a tendency to rush the harvest in to the kitchen and start cooking. I am doing good to remember to weigh it - let along photograph it!

Annie's Granny - Those are three of my favorites too AG. My carrots are slow this year because the first planting did not germinate well and I dug it up and replanted with something else. The second planting is coming along nicely but is later than normal due to the late start.

villager - I am pretty happy with the garlic harvest but I wish I had planted more of the regular garlic. I think I will try some different varieties and plant more of it this coming fall.

It's interesting that you're still harvesting lettuce. All of mine, with the exception of my cut-and-come again, have turned inedible.

I'm wondering whether I should harvest my garlic as well. They have yellow tips but are still looking relatively green.

Nice big potatoes, those garlic and broccoli look really good, I'm envious of your lettuce harvest.

Thomas - the lettuce is going strong because our weather has been so unusually cool and wet this year. That is about to change though. Calling for a 25 degree increase from the 65 degree temps today in only two days time. Rapid warm up will likely doom my remaining lettuce crop.

Allison - Potatoes are a great garden crop - produces a large harvest for the square footage of space used.

mac - I have been waiting quite a while for both the potatoes and the broccoli - neither dissappointed! There is just nothing like really fresh well grown broccoli - steamed with a little butter and salt. Pure heaven. :D .

Nice Harvest! I really enjoyed my lettuce while it was producing. This is the first year that I was able to grow any, and will definitely be planting some next year! Great looking potatoes, too!

I have to get my garlic harvested sometime this week as our house sale might move up. I don't want to lose the garlic I've been growing. After our hot dry weather and more to come I'm sure it will be ready. I miss not having potatoes this year though. Maybe next year.

Lori - Lettuces have been the star of the early summer garden this year. While I have always been able to grow pretty good lettuce crops on this property, this year was exceptional because of the prolonged and unusual cool and wet weather we had all through May and June.

vrtlarica - The broccoli just started to produce this week. Now it will be a race to harvest it all before it bolts because the weather is dramatically warming up this week.

Daphne - I ended up harvesting garlic about three weeks earlier than usual because the elephant garlic was getting soft in the neck area and lying over and the regular garlic was yellowing on the outerleaves. I bet with all the heat you are having that the garlic will be ready for you to do the harvest.

Ohhh, you have such a variety of great vegetables for your harvest. I smiled when I read that you round your harvest to the nearest 1/4 lb. I have to round mine to the nearest 1/4 oz to really see progress on individual harvest totals. :) I really need to figure out how to grow potatoes next year. I remember reading something about hills and thought hmm, maybe I should figure out the regular in-dirt growing first before I figure out all these other methods of growing.

Dan - Always a challenge to try and post anything on Monday as my work week is usually pretty wild - especially on Monday's. I figure if I do it on Sunday evening though that will work.

thyme2garden - Potatoes are relatively easy to grow and very rewarding. There is two areas on this site that you can go to for more information on growing potatoes. One is in the "How To" info pages on the top side bar menu items. The other you can find by clicking on "potatoes" from the blog category menu items - also in the side bar here on the blog page. The latter covers the method I am using this year to grow potatoes - the John Jeavon's method. I think the current method is going to prove to be the most productive based on what I am seeing in the patch so far this year.
