2010 Annual Tomato Plant Giveaway

Posted on April 29, 2010 at 10:26 PM

Each year I start more vegetable seedlings than I ultimately need in order to hedge the risk of plant losses that normally occur.   With tomatoes, I plant even more than that because over the years it has become a tradition to provide tomatoes for my staff and co-workers.

It has been almost two weeks since I planted out my own tomatoes and all of the plants are doing splendidly so it is safe to say that I no longer needed to keep spares on hand.   It was time to take my surplus tomato starts into work for the annual tomato plant giveaway.    This morning I packed up all but the plants earmarked for my sister and tucked them into the back of my Honda Fit.

Had to make two trips with a wheeled cart to get them all transported into the building and set out on the conference room table.

Every single one of the plants was taken in short order; even one that got scrunched a bit in the transporting process!   I still have plants to get to my sister, but for the most part the annual tomato plant giveaway is now history for 2010!

Nice ! I started way too many tomatoes last year and did a lot of plant giving but found recipients (friends and family) weren't as enthusiastic as I thought they'd be about growing them. This year, I'm keeping only one fallback for each variety. I'll still be giving them away (who can toss a perfectly good plant ?) but will probably put a sign in the driveway instead. I figure those who stop will really want them.

I'm guessing that right about now, you are the most popular girl in the office. This was very generous of you. I hope you received many thanks.

That is so nice of you. I usually keep my extras until they look awful then toss them. I wish I didn't have to kill them off. This year I might not have extras if the new garden gets up in time.

Isn't it great! I gave away 13 well-started celery seedlings and 9 gallon-sized tomato plants to co-workers this year (the first year I've done so - we had a successful seed starting year; let's hope it holds for the actual growing season!). I was surprised how enthusiastic people were! All give-aways were spoken for within 1/2 hour of my "Seedlings Seeking New Home" e-mail (and I had to turn away the late comers). If it all proves to end well (i.e., the plants actually do well and I hear good things in the Fall), I may start a few extra next year for the express purpose of giving them away to folks.

Neighbors will be bombarded with excess lettuce this weekend...

miss m - I think the reception has a lot to do with the overall gardening interest of the potential recipients. I have expanded the number of plants in the last two years because I have more people in my current office that show a definite enthusiasm for receiving them.

Thomas - Lots of thanks are indeed received. The thing that always makes me happiest though is when I get stories about how well the plants produced for people the prior year. Kind of the proud parent syndrome. :D

Daphne - Two gardens will definitely place a large demand for seedlings this year. Will you be planting the tomatoes at the new home or the old garden?

foodgardenkitchen - People do seem to love the annual plant giveaway! I have been enjoying your blog too and it's in my list of blogs that I try to visit frequently.

Becky - I wish you were too! Or at least a close enough neighbor that I could share. :D
