Looking Forward To The Weekend - Updated 1/17/2010

Posted on January 14, 2010 at 12:18 AM

Three-day weekend coming up for me and I am looking forward to it with more anticipation than normal, because my work schedule has been over full of late.   It also represents a a great opportunity to knock through several garden related tasks and projects that I have on my personal “to do” list.

  • Start some onion and lettuce seeds  (Done - started some Pac Choi too)
  • Pot up the Chinese cabbage and kale starts into larger containers (Done)
  • Purchase materials to make my planting jigs (Done)
  • Construct planting jig – attempt to translate the idea in my head into an actual tool  (Done)
  • Process the remaining two pumpkins in the storage area into puree (freeze in 2 cup portions)  (Done)
  • Do some baking – extra loaves of no knead bread for the freezer for emergency weeks, pumpkin muffins to use up some of my surplus of pumpkin puree
  • Weather permitting – turn over the green manure crops of crimson clover and let them start decomposing

The seedlings I started on December 13th are a month old today and are rapidly outgrowing their starter cell pots.

I am going to pot them into some larger containers and keep them under the grow lights for a while longer before eventually transplanting them under the protection of the greenhouse (or a grow tunnel) to grow to maturity.   The weather is still pretty cold and the sun strength and length is still pretty low (albeit increasing!).   I think another month under the lights is probably a good idea but they definitely need to move into more roomy quarters for their roots.

Hopefully I will have an update soon on how the shop project (planting jigs) worked out to share with you.

No-knead bread, huh? I considered getting that book a while back. My family is so afraid of bread because of the carbs but it fascinates me and I love to bake it!

I'm anxious to get started on sowing some seeds. I think I'm gonna live dangerously and try to transplant a few spring crops extra early under cover. I want to try to get as much use out of my hoop houses as I can.

The Chinese cabbage looks great. I can't wait to start my own seedlings. Soon but not yet.

KalenaMichele - I like the no knead bread because it makes a nice artisan style loaf.

Thomas - I like to live just a little dangerously too and usually push the spring season pretty hard.

Daphne - If the cabbages were destined for the garden proper - this would be too early for me too, but these are likely going to be greenhouse crops to get us through the lean months of March and April when the garden is planted up but nothing much is matured for harvesting.

Lindsey S - This is super early seed starting for only the cold hard crops and even at that they will be given some protection for the first month or so.

I'm anxious to start some seeds, but am still waiting for them to arrive. It's also a bit early for my area. Can't wait to see the planting jigs.

hsheather - I can't wait to see the planting jigs either - because at this point it is just an idea in my head - that may or may not work!

I've got tons of office work to finish up, then I'll be putting some seed-starting, buying time in. I need to plan out my garden for this coming year. I did manage to bake 8 loaves of bread during work (from home) the last two days. Into the freezer they went for quick meals with home-canned tomato soup during the busy days of spring gardening.

Hope you have a productive weekend! The pumpkin muffins sound great, going to share the recipe when they are done? Your starts are looking very healthy. I am starting my onions near the end of the month and have been thinking of starting some indoor greens at the same time. Way to early to think of putting things outside here yet.

Whew! I've been away from your blog for a while, but I'm caught up now. Your seedlings look delightful, your hoop houses look delightful, your carrots and cabbage look delightful

I'm terribly sorry about the loss of your beloved companion. It's awfully difficult to lose a pet, even when they've lived a full, happy life.

Chiots Run - 8 LOAVES of bread! Holy Smokes! You are a baking machine! Mmmmm... homemade tomato soup and fresh baked bread... scrumptious.

Dan - I was planning to use a recipe posted by none other than hsheather (see comment from her above!) on her website Heathers Homemaking. The post can be seen here and the recipe -
