Monday Harvest Post

Posted on December 28, 2009 at 8:59 AM

Daphne at Daphne's Dandelions regularly hosts a "Monday Harvest" post whereby everyone shares their harvest for the week.   Up until today, I have not participated in this weekly event (although I always enjoy reading about everyone else's harvests!) because I generally do not have pictures of everything I harvested over the course of the week and my Monday's are usually just too wickedly crazy.   However, I decided to join in this week because Daphne made a genuine plea for participation to chase away the winter blahs and put visions of tomatoes and spinach  in her head for the holidays.

No tomatoes or spinach, but will some fresh kale and crisp cold carrots do?

Harvested Sunday afternoon.    The ground was frozen solid for the first two or three inches of the soil and the kale has been through several freezes too.   The result is that the sugar content is quite high in both the carrots and the kale - quite yummy!

I harvested brussel sprouts on Christmas Eve day as well, but unfortunately... no pictures of that harvest to share.

Oh yes those will do quite well. It must have been hard digging out carrots from frozen soil, but they look delicious.

Your harvest is beautiful! I'm not sure what I would do at this time of year if I didn't like kale and other brassicas, they're the mainstay of my winter garden.

Your harvest looks great! I have not harvested anything in the past 2 weeks. Lots out there still though, I need to get it harvested soon.

Daphne - It was indeed a little tricky to get the carrots out of the frozen soil!

Michelle - I would be in trouble too if we did not like the brassica family plants, but thankfully we do like them - in fact we like them alot!

Dan - I have not been harvesting often, probably about twice a week right now. Just enough to supplement the frozen and preserved items with fresh fare. This is the lowest point in the garden production season - December through February are definitely the lean times.

I looks like we're harvesting much of the same things. I don't recognize that variety of kale though...looks nice and succulent.

I would love to be harvesting brussel sprouts right now. Maybe next year.

Nice haul!

Thomas - The kale is "Improved Dwarf Siberian" It is my favorite because it produces a nice full leafy green, providing a good harvest amount for the space occupied. Excellent tasting too.
