Winter Garden Tour Video

Posted on December 27, 2009 at 1:25 AM

My first attempts at creating and posting some videos.   I don't think I will be quitting my day job to become a film director - but I believe it gives a good overview of the garden in winter.

These videos are great! I think you did a fantastic job! I love getting tours of other people's gardens...even virtual ones! I'm a bit envious that your winter garden can be grown much less protected than mine. Oh well. That's what happens when you (or I rather) live in New England.

I can't wait for the summer tour!

How cool! It's so great to watch this and see a different perspective from the still shots. Keep making the videos, they're wonderful.

Thomas - I defiitely did not get as much protection set up before the freezes hit as I did last year. Partially by actual choice not to, but the winter freezes came early this year and so what little I planned to do was just too late getting set up. Luckily we can overwinter certain items with little or no cover.

Daphne - You are welcome!

hsheather - I do think the videos allow you to gain a better context of how things are really laid out. I thought I would do a Spring, Summer, and Fall video to follow this winter tour to show the progression of the garden through the season. It's frozen, got some weeds, and is largely resting right now - not so interesting but one of the normal cycles of the garden.

Cool videos, the camera does a really good job. Nice to see the layout, it always is different then pictures. That rabbit really was busy, a bit of a messy eater!

Dan - I am pretty excited about the quality of the pictures from this little camera. Sandy (The Zero Fossil Fuel 10 Year Challenge) recommended it to me about a year ago and I have been toying with the idea ever since. And yes, the rabbit has been really going to town in the carrot and clover patches.

I loved the video tour! Now I have a better understanding on how your garden is laid out. Boy that bunny wreaked some havoc on the carrots. You did very well with the videos.

GrafixMuse - I am looking forward to sharing the garden later in the season when there is more interesting things "growing on" to talk about . Videos definitely provide a more complete perspective of how things are laid out than a still image can provide. As for the rabbit, I think I mentioned before that he is very large and I imagine it is largely because my garden has been feeding him quite well. I got the grow tunnel put up over the main bed of carrots and parsnips - so they are protected from him now.

I love it! Boo to bunny though, I'm waiting to see how you box him out since I need to do something like that this summer for my rats.

Sustainable Eats - I just put up the PVC hoops and because it is winter - I used the plastic grow tunnel covers over the bed of parsnips and carrots. If it were summer I would put the bird netting over the hoops. Both work as a physical barrier to animals getting into the bed. However, it is not failsafe, a really persistent rat is going to chew through just about anything you put up.

They tunneled under the can of chicken food in the back yard and I've heard they chew through metal so I'm checking it daily. They completely ignored the rat traps...
