Summer Eats

Posted on July 28, 2009 at 10:08 PM

The first of the large tomatoes (Legend) was fully ripe today and ready to be harvested.   It weighed in at just a shade over a half pound.   Another very big one (Siletz) is right behind it - probably ready tomorrow.   Large clusters of the Stupice tomatoes are breaking color too.   On June 11th, I predicted that the tomato ripening process would start occurring in earnest in mid-July.    It turns out I was off by about two weeks, but generally pretty close.

In my opinion, there are only two ways to eat the first ripe full size tomato of the season:

  1. standing in the garden - eating it like an apple; or
  2. BLT sandwiches

Since my family would have been quite unhappy with me if I kept this to myself, I opted for choice number 2.

With that in mind, I made sure the harvest for the evening included all the necessary fixins' for a good BLT; the tomato (of course), some lettuce or a summer alternative (young swiss chard leaves), and sweet onion for slicing.

The red of the tomato, the tropical colors of the "Bright Lights" swiss chard, and the cool white of the sweet onion, all combine to paint a tapestry of good summer eating.

From the garden these went to the kitchen - where the tomato and onions were sliced and some bacon cooked until crisp.

Some good cracked wheat sour dough bread, a little mayo, and the end result is a sandwich that was all pleasure to eat on an incredibly hot summer evening.

Hope you are enjoying good summer eating from your garden too.

Wow, great looking tomato. Great idea on the BLT. I too harvested my first two tomatoes today for a salad. I'm pretty sure they're bloody butcher. They may have been over-ripe. I'm still learning when to harvest, but they didn't taste all that great. I was just extatic that I got lettuce, tomato, cucumber and carrot for my salad today. I'd have radishes if I didn't let them go to seed. Oops.

My main problem with my tomatoes now is when to harvest they yellow varieties. Some are looking yellow, but green and yellow are very close in color, hehe.

Hmm I usually go for basil, mozzarella and a little olive oil, but then I dislike bacon so a BLT is just out of the question for me.

sinfonian - See, now that is why I never grow yellow tomatoes! LOL! First, I just like red (really red) tomatoes, but second, I really am not sure I would figure out "ripe" in a yellow variety very well. :D

hsheather - If you were closer I would share some. Hopefully you will enjoy some too (soon).

Daphne - Basil, mozzarella and a drizzle of olive oil is darn good too.

The BLT's was the second thing I made with my first tomatoes and will be photoed on Thursdays garden meals. The first tomatoes were served as a tomato & cucumber salad along side local sweet corn, the perfect summer dinner! Your tomato is beautiful!

You just gave my the final reason I needed to get to the farmer's market in the morning - I'm all out of bacon and the tomatoes are red! Thanks for the idea.
