Fourth of July Harvest

Posted on July 4, 2009 at 6:16 PM

This morning I dug up four pounds of fresh potatoes for the purposes of preparing a potato salad for our Fourth of July dinner menu.    I harvested some "Caribe" ( which are the purple skinned potatoes), a volunteer "Yukon Gold" plant, and I stole a couple of "Red Cloud" potatoes (red one in the center of the photo) out from under a plant.   I also cut a few zucchinis and pulled a couple of onions.

The early season potatoes (Caribe & Red Cloud) are starting to get some good size on them.  The mid season potato (Yukon Gold) is a little smaller at this point but definitely well on their way too.

This morning I had a nice garden visit from Lori Christie. She lives in the Seabeck area, which is quite close by. We spent almost two hours walking about the garden and talking about what we each do in our respective gardens, the changes we have made or plan to make, and the things that are working for us currently.   It is a very warm day today, so we tended to keep migrating back into shadier areas to catch a little relief from the sun! All in all it was a very pleasant visit and it was quite fun to meet Lori in person.

Happy Fourth of July everyone!

Dan - They WERE delicious. I was pleased to find the Caribe are so sized up already. This is a really good potato variety if you are looking to try something new next year. I am a fan of Caribe as it produces a really abundant and quality potato each and every year.

Thanks Matron. It lost the nice colorful effect when I scrubbed the peels off of the new potatoes before boiling them - but it sure was colorful in the colander after harvesting!

That all looks fantastic! I haven't harvested any of my new potatoes yet, but I've been buying them at the farmer's market.

I'll have to give Caribe a try next year. I'm looking for new ones to try, my mom wanted to grow Yukons this year and we split a seed potato order.

Chiot's Run - Caribe is indeed a really nice potato variety, well worth the planting. If I had more garden room, I would grow even more potato varieties. I really like trying lots of tomato and potato varieties - unfortunately they both take up a alot of room so I have to confine my interest (somwhat!).

The potatoes look wonderful! I have many of the same varieties. I haven't harvested any yet, but now am getting ideas to start sneaking some out. :-)

Sandy - You should definitely start stealing a few fresh potatoes now. I always plant enough that I can harvest a reasonable amount fresh through the summer before doing the big dig and storage process in the early fall.
