Holiday Long Weekend (UPDATED 7/5/09)

Posted on July 3, 2009 at 11:01 AM

It's a long weekend and we definitely plan to do some celebrating of the Fourth.   Grilling and enjoying some traditional summer time foods, late evening fireworks display, and a little time just sitting outside soaking up some sun - all are on the agenda.    In addition, I have several things I want to get accomplished in the garden as well.

  • Water the garden beds and all container plantings (Completed 7/5/09)
  • Pick, shell, and preserve garden peas (Completed 7/3/09)
  • Start more seeds for fall crops - more brocoli, chinese cabbage, kale, lettuce, & swiss chard (Completed 7/4/09)
  • Remove spent broccoli plants - sow a summer green manure crop of buckwheat in that section (Completed 7/5/09)
  • Visit with Lori Christie who is planning to stop by Saturday morning for a garden visit (looking forward to it!) (Accomplished - 7/4/09!)

The list is not too long but two of the tasks take quite a bit of time - picking, shelling, and preserving garden peas; and watering the entire garden.    This is the pea patch and as you can see it is quite a large undertaking to strip that clean of pods!

I will come back and update this post later to note progress made on the planned tasks.

Did you meet Lori Cristie from HT? She has some seriously gorgeous garden pics.

I'm curious how you pick the pea patch. Are you able to find them all, or do they get lost in all the greenery? It looks like a neat system. Mine are grown along the garden fence for easy snacking!

hsheather - I did indeed connect with Lori at HT. I am hoping to stop by her garden for a visit soon too. Since she lives relatively close by it is possible to do that. As to your other question, I just posted a blog entry on doing the harvesting and preserving of peas. I don't always pick by stripping like that - just worked out to be the best option this particular time. The garden peas are a variety that mature essentially all at once to make preserving easy. The sugar snap peas though - grow on a vertical trellis and are picked in the traditional manner and for a much longer harvest period.
