2010 Seed Starting Schedule

The following seed starting schedule is based on my experience growing in this region and planting zone (zone 8b). The average last frost date for this area is April 15th and the average first frost date is November 15th. While the last frost usually occurs in early April, the soil is often still quite cool for some weeks thereafter. As a consequence, early plantings usually involve the use of grow tunnel covers prior to and for a period after planting - to warm up the soil sufficiently and to protect the young plants from erratic early spring weather. Similarly, fall and winter planted items are also usually protected either by a grow tunnel cover or by being planted in containers inside of the unheated greenhouse.
